Job Description
As a key part of the Milton Keynes Mental Health Support Team (MHST), you will be instrumental in increasing access to mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people. You will work within schools and other settings, collaborating with EMHPs, CWPs, Senior Wellbeing Practitioners, and Team Leaders to deliver low-intensity interventions.
Your main duties will involve undertaking assessments of children and young people, and delivering evidence-based low-intensity group and individual interventions. These interventions will target mild to moderate anxiety, depression, and/or behavioural difficulties for young people and their families/carers. You will also play a crucial role in supporting school staff to foster a whole-school approach to mental well-being, requiring flexibility, adaptability, and a genuine desire to work with young people facing mental health challenges within an educational context.
Requirements
- Must be a qualified and registered Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) or a Children and Young People Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP).
- Alternatively, a qualified and registered Mental Health Nurse, Occupational Therapist, or Social Worker with consolidated postgraduate experience working with young people.
- Demonstrable experience in delivering evidenced-based CBT interventions for mild to moderate mental health issues to children and young people (CYP) both individually and in groups.
- Enthusiasm for improving health outcomes for children and young people.
- Flexibility and adaptability, with a strong desire to work with children and young people with mental health difficulties in an educational context.
- Applicants must either have the right to work in the UK or be eligible for Skilled Worker (Tier 2) visa sponsorship.
Benefits
- Competitive NHS Band 6 salary (£39,959 to £48,117 a year, pro rata if Part Time).
- Visa / Skilled Worker (Tier 2) sponsorship available for eligible foreign / overseas applicants.
- Opportunities for professional development, including PG Certificate in Supervision for Children and Young People's Services or Senior Wellbeing Practitioner training.
- Access to other service-specific training in a range of evidence-based therapeutic modalities.
- Being part of a passionate team committed to delivering first-class patient-centred care within the NHS.
- Support for career development across a diverse range of opportunities within mental health, community services, and more.
How to Prepare
For Nigerian and African immigrants eyeing this NHS Mental Health Practitioner role, preparation is key. Focus on tailoring your CV to highlight your postgraduate experience with young people and your expertise in CBT interventions, ensuring it aligns with UK professional standards. Your LinkedIn profile should also reflect these skills and achievements, making it easy for UK recruiters to find you. Remember to gather all necessary professional registrations, such as your NMC PIN if applicable, and prepare strong references from previous roles.
When crafting your cover letter, clearly articulate your motivation for working with children and young people in a UK educational context and express your enthusiasm for the specific objectives of the MHST. During the interview, be ready to discuss your experience confidently and, if you require sponsorship, be prepared to explain your visa needs clearly and professionally, demonstrating your understanding of the Skilled Worker visa requirements and your commitment to relocating to the UK.
- Ensure your professional registration (e.g., NMC PIN for Nurses) is current or in process, and gather any necessary certificates (like DBS if you already have a UK one).
- Refine your CV to a UK format, emphasizing relevant experience with CYP and CBT interventions, quantifying achievements where possible.
- Prepare a compelling cover letter that directly addresses the job description and expresses your passion for mental health support for young people.
- Practice articulating your experience and suitability for the role, especially how your skills translate to the UK context.
- Be ready to discuss your visa sponsorship needs transparently and professionally during the interview, demonstrating your commitment to the role and the UK immigration process.
